Mirra paused for only a single breath. She willed her face into an empty smile and continued forward. She made sure that her footsteps could be heard by Lord Julian and Nora who sat at the far end of the room, closest to the hearth.

“My lord, my lady.” Mirra sank into a deep curtsy. She rose and took her seat to the left of Lord Julian who sat at the head of the table.

Lord Julian’s piercing two-toned eyes caused her spine to crawl, but Mirra would never give him the satisfaction of knowing it. She had learned to completely hide her emotions by now.

Lord Julian turned to Nora and toasted her. “You’ve done it again, my dear. I hardly recognize her. You’ve managed to take a thieving guttersnipe and turn it into a respectable lady.”

Nora smiled as if his praise pleased her, but Mirra saw the tightness around her eyes and how tightly she gripped her glass. Her mentor was not pleased one bit.

“I’m almost tempted to let you keep her and see just how truly magnificent she would become under your tutelage.” Mirra took a sip from her own glass to mask her excitement. Would she really be allowed to stay?

“But of course, that would be a complete waste of her talents, and she still has more to learn.”

Why did I even get my hopes up?

“The usual procedure, then?”

Lord Julian nodded and then switched the topic.

Mirra had sensed being able to hear. She was to be moved again. Where would she end up this time? How many more times was she going to have to learn the rules of a new world, a new way of life? Would she ever find out what he wanted with her, or did he just enjoy reshuffling her life every few years?

After diner, Mirra tossed and turned in her bed. No matter how hard she tried, she couldn’t shut her mind off. She ran every possible place he might drop her next, what else he thought she needed to learn. Part of her was excited; she had come to enjoy learning new things, but the larger part of herself was filled with dread. Nothing Lord Julian wanted could ever be good for her.
